This program is about the discovery of the French capital city from a historical and cultural point of view. Lectures focus on the history of Paris and French culture. A variety of readings complement these lectures. Being IN Paris, however, allows for much expansion on the information merely available through reading and lectures (see next answer).
Furthermore, the experience of living in France, and having to face the challenges of this situation, adds another layer to the students' comprehension of France.
Lectures in both classes correlate to visits of sites mentioned during class on a daily basis. For instance, the Paris history class session that deals with the events leading to the construction of the Basilica of Saint Denis is immediately followed by a visit of said Basilica. Each visit begins with a student presentation of the site (all in French), and is followed by a complementary presentation of the same site by the faculty (in French, with partial translation). Students visit over a dozen significant monuments/museums with the group.
Housing: the program is housed in the Maison des étudiants canadiens, on the campus of the Cité internationale, which is managed by French-speaking Canadians and French employees. Students are housed in double or single rooms, with communal kitchens. This offers numerous opportunities to interact in French, on a variety of levels, with fellow foreign students and MEC staff. Teaching: many hours are spent on-site, visiting and learning about significant monuments and places in Paris and around the capital.
Interaction with the French is always a challenge, which out UW student have always handled successfully. Years of positive interaction with the MEC community and with Parisians have given our institution a reputation for civility and curiosity about all matters French; respect for France, and affection for its cultural specificities. From a student's point of view, it has been, at the very least, an enlightening journey into the heart of a country, fraught with challenges and surprises.

All students and levels are welcome and encouraged to apply (there is a French 103 language requirement.) Primarily, however, this is primarily a program for undergraduates.
Apart from the language requirement, one faculty/TA recommendation is required, as well as a letter of motivation. As the program directors, we are happy to welcome all students who wish to participate, up to a number that has reached 32, but that tends to be between 20 and 25. A first come first served basis is used to select students. The only--rare--disqualifying factor has been concern over the academic progress of a student, and fear that the program might distract from a focus needed on his or her studies on campus.
This program is a high-energy “mobile” experience that involves a great amount of walking and the use of public transportation that is not conceived for people with physical challenges. In 16 years, we have never dealt with a student who was physically challenged, but we would happy to accommodate such a student. “How” is the only issue, not “whether” our program could work for such a student, and we would definitely rise to the worthy opportunity of making Paris accessible to anyone with physical limitations.

From the Parisi to contemporary Paris: this class will trace the cultural history of the development of the French capital from its settlement to our century. Attention will be paid to the various phases of the Parisian urban development (King Philippe Auguste, Henri IV, Louis XV, Napoléon, Haussmann). Course work will involve numerous visits to Parisian sites.
Increasing foreign culture proficiency in an immersion setting.
This class will function as a complement to the History of Paris class. It will focus entirely on the development of oral production skills and comprehension. We will explore various audio-visual documents, as well as texts, all related to Parisian culture and history, which will enable us to learn new vocabulary and structures. We will also focus on phonetics and pronunciation. Through the use of tasks, we will achieve a high level of interaction among students while working on group projects and presentations.
Increasing French oral/aural proficiency in an immersion setting.

To be eligible to study abroad, all program participants must attend an in-person pre-departure orientation facilitated by the Study Abroad office as well as your program-specific orientations, offered by your program director.
You must register for orientation through your online study abroad account in order to attend scheduled orientations. You can visit the Orientation section of our website to view the current orientation schedule.
Orientation must be completed prior to the enrollment deadline for the quarter that you are studying abroad.
Financial aid and most scholarships are disbursed according to the UW academic calendar (at the beginning of the quarter). If your program starts before the start of the UW quarter, your financial aid will not be available to you prior to your departure. If your program starts after the first day of the quarter, your financial aid will be disbursed at the start of the program. In either of these cases, you will have to finance any upfront costs such as airfare, health insurance and the start of your time abroad on your own. Please take this into consideration when you are making plans.
In some instances you may qualify for an increase in your financial aid award (typically in loan funds). Check with the Financial Aid Office about your options. To request a revision in your aid, you will need to submit the following paperwork to the Financial Aid Office:

The application includes a Personal Statement, three short answer questions, one recommendation from a professor or TA, and electronic signature documents related to UW policies and expectations for study abroad. Following the on-line application process students may be contacted by the Program Director for an in-person interview. Once an admission decision has been made regarding your application, you will be notified by the study abroad system via email.
UW Study Abroad is not responsible for obtaining visas for study abroad program participants. The cost and requirements for obtaining visas vary. It is your responsibility to determine visa requirements for all countries you plan to visit while abroad including countries that you plan to visit before or after your study abroad program. For non-U.S. citizens, the procedures that you will need to follow may be different than those for U.S. citizens. It is important to initiate this process as soon as possible in order to assemble documents and allow time for lengthy procedures.

$350 of the total program fee and the $350 UW Study Abroad Fee are non-refundable and non-revocable once a contract has been submitted, even if you withdraw from the program. Students withdrawing from a program are responsible for paying a percentage of the program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. More details about the withdrawal policy are included in your payment contract. No part of the program fee is refundable once the program has begun. The date of withdrawal is considered the date (business day) a withdrawal form is received by the UW Study Abroad Office. Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing by completing the following steps:
1. Provide notice in writing to the Program Director that you will no longer be participating in the program for which you have signed a contract and accepted a slot.
2. Submit a signed withdrawal form to the UW Study Abroad Office, 459 Schmitz Hall.
