Where You Will Study

Seoul National University (SNU) is a national university founded in 1947. SNU has been recognized for its leading role in South Korean academia and served as a model for the many other national and public universities established later in the state. SNU has been regarded as the most eminent of all post-secondary educational institutions in South Korea and considered the most renowned university by the general public. SNU comprises sixteen colleges and six professional schools and has a student body of about 30,000. It has two campuses, of which the main campus rests at the foot of the majestic Kwanak Mountain located in Kwanak, in the southern outskirts of Seoul and about 10 miles from the downtown part of the city.

SNU offers a wide range of university courses, the majority of which are taught in Korean and will require a very high level of proficiency in Korean. However, SNU has recently developed courses in English within a wide range of disciplines that are offered to both international students who do not have adequate Korean language skills and to Korean students who have acquired English language skills at a very high level. SNU is also offering courses in the Korean language which will be either partially or fully funded for exchange students. Students will be admitted to a college or department but can take courses from all other programs and departments. Most courses are taught in the same way as in the U.S. Courses are typically offered as three semester credits. Five courses per semester are considered a full load. An overview of the program and the application process can be found here, as well as a list of undergraduate courses taught in English.

If you’re looking for a record of how courses from Seoul National University have been transferred in the past, visit the credit equivalency database to help you determine what foreign courses might satisfy your academic needs here at the UW.

For more information on how these courses will appear on your UW transcript, please visit: credits for exchanges

SNU offers exchange students housing in university residence halls; accepetance to a dormitory is likely but not guaranteed. However, many students decide to find housing outside of the campus on their own.

Program Expenses, Financial Aid & Scholarships

As a participant of a university exchange, you pay an exchange fee equivalent to UW tuition (1.5 quarters of UW tuition for semester-long exchanges, and 3 quarters of UW tuition for academic year exchanges). Exchange fees are determined by UW residency status: in-state students pay an exchange fee equivalent to in-state tuition, and out-of-state students pay an exchange fee equivalent to out-of-state tuition. The exchange fee and IPE administrative fee are charged to your UW account and due by the UW tuition deadline for your term(s) of study abroad. You should also budget for additional expenses such as international airfare & transportation, books & course materials, visa & passport fees, study abroad insurance and personal expenses.

For the total estimated costs of this particular program, you may request a budget by filling out a Budget Request Form.

Program Evaluations

After participating in a UW Study Abroad program, students are asked to complete a Program Evaluation Report detailing their experiences abroad and giving advice for future students.
