Program Description

This study abroad course being offered in Early Fall 2017 is designed to provide students with an experiential learning opportunity in a resource-poor country (India). Health challenges and the health care system in India, as well as the policies and interventions aimed to reduce inequalities in health, will be explored. This course is expected to provide a rich global experience for students as well as an opportunity to observe health professionals and agencies in a developing nation.

Two clinical placement sites will be used for this program: (1) Christian Medical College in Vellore, India and (2) Sri Ramachandra Medical Center in Chennai, India.

While in India, field trips to health and social agencies, occupational sites, schools, and rural clinics will be scheduled. Lectures by local faculty and professionals in health and human services will be arranged. Discussion groups when in India will be held as well.

India has made strides toward improvement in health outcomes for its 1.3 billion people, yet overall health indicators are similar to those in other low-income and developing nations. Poverty, poor nutrition, and the lack of health care are compounded by urban growth and environmental degradation. While communicable diseases (malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS) are a major factor affecting health, chronic illness and disabling conditions associated with aging are emerging challenges. The traditions and unique mixture of cultures including Hindu, Muslim and English Colonial influence the social, economic, and health care practices of today. In turn, these structural conditions influence the health of individuals, families and communities, as they are linked to physical, social and personal resources to cope with health challenges. India is the world’s largest democracy and is projected to be the most populated countries and the fastest growing economies in the world. These factors point to the importance of developing a better understanding of health in India.

The College of Nursing, Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, is extremely active in community health and development and has been working with volunteers for many years. Some of the opportunities that we can provide students would be opportunities to work with the College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) programs that provide maternal and child health, the Community Health and Development (CHAD) programs (Urban units, leprosy program, Tuberculosis awareness camps and DOTS program, tribal health program, health education, day care centers for the elderly, adolescent health program), the Rural Unit For Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) that is located about 30 km from Vellore and involved in education and in social and economic development, and the Low Cost Effective Care Unit that provides medical care for the underprivileged in the urban slums of Vellore.

Sri Ramachandra Medical Center is situated in Porur, Chennai is one of the largest private health care facilities in South Asia. Here students will have access to the different wards as well as the emergency room in the evenings.

Pre-Requisites/Language Requirements

The course is designed for undergraduate and graduate nursing, medicine, public health, pharmacy, social work, and other students interested in health issues in a developing nation. In the past we have also had students from Dentistry, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistants participate in the course. This course is for students who have a desire to learn about how health in developing nations is influenced by social, cultural, political, economic, environmental, structural, and ecological factors.

There are no specific prerequisites for the course; however, a basic background in the sciences and interest in health care is recommended.

There are no physical requirement for this program; however, India is not a country that has many accommodations for those who are disabled.

NURS 597 & 413 or GH 490 (5 credits)

This course provides a basic overview of the health and health care challenges in a developing and low-income country. Socio-cultural, environmental, economic, political and ecological factors that influence health, illness, disability and death as well as responses to health issues both within and outside the health sector are addressed.

Learning Goals: 

1. Analyze the fundamental determinants of population health, illness, disability and death in a developing country.

2. Describe the current health care system (public, private, voluntary sectors; traditional systems of medicine, role of international agencies)

3. Use your own field experience in a developing nation to synthesize how contemporary inequalities in health are addressed.

To be eligible to study abroad, all program participants must attend an in-person pre-departure orientation facilitated by the Study Abroad office as well as your program-specific orientations, offered by your program director.

You must register for orientation through your online study abroad account in order to attend scheduled orientations. You can visit the Orientation section of our website to view the current orientation schedule.

Orientation must be completed prior to the enrollment deadline for the quarter that you are studying abroad.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most forms of financial aid can be applied to study abroad. You can verify that your financial aid award will apply to your program costs by contacting the Financial Aid Office. Financial aid or scholarships awarded as tuition waivers or tuition exemptions might not apply so you will need to verify that these funds are eligible for use with study abroad by contacting the funding office.

Financial aid and most scholarships are disbursed according to the UW academic calendar (at the beginning of the quarter). If your program starts before the start of the UW quarter, your financial aid will not be available to you prior to your departure. If your program starts after the first day of the quarter, your financial aid will be disbursed at the start of the program. In either of these cases, you will have to finance any upfront costs such as airfare, health insurance and the start of your time abroad on your own. Please take this into consideration when you are making plans.

Revision Request

In some instances you may qualify for an increase in your financial aid award (typically in loan funds). Check with the Financial Aid Office about your options. To request a revision in your aid, you will need to submit the following paperwork to the Financial Aid Office:

Application Process

The application includes a Personal Statement, three short answer questions, one recommendation from a professor or TA, and electronic signature documents related to UW policies and expectations for study abroad. Following the on-line application process students may be contacted by the Program Director for an in-person interview. Once an admission decision has been made regarding your application, you will be notified by the study abroad system via email.


UW Study Abroad is not responsible for obtaining visas for study abroad program participants. The cost and requirements for obtaining visas vary. It is your responsibility to determine visa requirements for all countries you plan to visit while abroad including countries that you plan to visit before or after your study abroad program. For non-U.S. citizens, the procedures that you will need to follow may be different than those for U.S. citizens. It is important to initiate this process as soon as possible in order to assemble documents and allow time for lengthy procedures.

$350 of the total program fee and the $350 UW Study Abroad Fee are non-refundable and non-revocable once a contract has been submitted, even if you withdraw from the program. Students withdrawing from a program are responsible for paying a percentage of the program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. More details about the withdrawal policy are included in your payment contract. No part of the program fee is refundable once the program has begun. The date of withdrawal is considered the date (business day) a withdrawal form is received by the UW Study Abroad Office. Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing by completing the following steps:

1. Provide notice in writing to the Program Director that you will no longer be participating in the program for which you have signed a contract and accepted a slot.

2. Submit a signed withdrawal form to the UW Study Abroad Office, 459 Schmitz Hall.
