General |
Tokyo will be your classroom. Visit Tokyo’s traditional hot spots, like the temple at Asakusa, the gardens of the Imperial Palace, and the Meiji Grand Shrine. You can also learn about Tokyo’s younger generations by visiting popular districts like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Harajuku. |
Explore centuries-old temples, gardens, and castles that are only minutes from ultra-modern skyscrapers, electronics stores, and haute couture fashion centers. Dine on sushi and tempura, attend a sumo match or a baseball game, and learn tea ceremony, karate, or breakdancing. Take classes in the town of Makuhari, on the tip of Tokyo Bay, and just 45 minutes from the heart of the city. All of this and so much more awaits you in Tokyo!

Courses
Expand your understanding of this country by immersing yourself in contemporary Japan and its culture—what better way to learn the Japanese language? At Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS), you take a 6-credit language course specially designed for IES Abroad students. You'll also take English-language area studies courses focusing on popular culture, economics, history, political science, and contemporary society. KUIS is a modern and vibrant university with an international faculty and state-of-the-art facilities.
Please visit the program website to learn more about the courses.
If you’re looking for a record of how courses from this institution have been transferred in the past, visit the credit equivalency database to help you determine what foreign courses might satisfy your academic needs here at the UW.
For more information about receiving credits for your study abroad, visit Earning credits abroad.
Housing
Students can choose from one of the many options listed below:
Residence Halls: Live with Japanese university students and young professionals in a privately managed residence hall, that offers single rooms with shared common spaces and bathrooms.
Homestays: Live with a host family, forge life-long friendships, and learn about Japanese customs, manners, and cuisine.
Shared Apartments: Live with Japanese university students, other IES Abroad students, and young Japanese professionals in this privately managed co-ed building.
The UW Study Abroad Office can't officially advise you about visas.
The volume and diversity of students participating, the shifting requirements of foreign governments, and the complexity of these applications make it impossible for us to accurately advise you on immigration policies.
If your program requires a visa, documentation will be provided from your host institution after your acceptance.
Program Expenses
The Study Abroad fees will be posted to your MyUW student account and can be paid the same way that you pay tuition and other fees. Check your MyUW Account periodically for due dates. Students must pay the course-related fees directly through the IES Abroad program website.
