NOTE: Earn 10 UW credits during CIEE's Spring Open Campus Block III from 3/30-5/9 or combine it with CIEE's Summer Session I (from mid-May-mid-June) for a total of 15-16 UW credits. To be considered for a UW Study Abroad Scholarship, you must apply by the priority deadline of November 1st and must combine Open Campus Spring Block III with Summer Session I.

Program Overview

Head south of the equator and discover the colorful and exuberant city of Rio de Janeiro! Experience the city’s stunning natural beauty while advancing your academics on our fully customizable Open Campus Block Program. Take one, two, or three six-week blocks, select your courses from a wide range of subject areas. In Rio, you’ll be located within Villa Aymoré, an early 20th century residential villa renovated into a state-of-the-art urban office space.

Stay in Rio the entire time or spend other blocks at our Global Institute locations in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Yucatán, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago, Shanghai, and Sydney.

Your Destination

Rio de Janeiro is all about street life; the social and cultural life of the city is all out in the open. Rio is the third largest metropolitan area in South America and the most visited city in the southern hemisphere. Known for its stunning natural beauty, Carnival celebrations, musical culture, and renowned beaches. Rio’s iconic landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and Maracanã stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.
 

Excursions & Activities

During your study abroad in Rio, you may enjoy some of these activities:

  • Take a Study Tour trip to Salvador da Bahia and discover vibrant Afro-diaspora cultural traditions.
  • See why Brazilians are mad about football by attending a live match at the Maracanã, one of the world´s biggest soccer stadium.
  • Take percussion lessons with professional samba players.
  • Immerse yourself in Rio’s rich local culture during Carnival and many other festivities.
  • Experience a capoeira lesson.
  • Take a hike on one of the many trails through the Atlantic Forest that envelopes the city. You can even hike to the top of Corcovado mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statues awaits you.

Projects, Volunteer Opportunities, or Internships

Volunteer Opportunities: give back and create a deeper connection to Rio de Janeiro. In a country known for urban poverty, you will gain as much as you give, helping with education, health, or community building. Teach English, foster professional skills in women, and much more.

Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their course selection:

Service-Learning: combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need.

?Research: pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent and local fieldwork.
