Where You Will Study

Located along the banks of the Swan River in Perth, the University of Western Australia is one of Australia's top research institutions and the only university to be a member of the prestigious "Group of Eight" in the State of Western Australia. The high caliber of its teaching staff, state-of-the-art research facilities, well-equipped lecture theaters and laboratories provide a superb environment to stimulate creativity and growth. Founded in 1913 the University of Western Australia serves a student body of 18,000 students and is one of the most attractive universities in Australia with its Romanesque-style limestone buildings, expansive lawns and mature trees.
Along with it being home to one of the premier Universities in Australia, Perth also hosts an International Arts Festival, which has grown dramatically each year. The Arts Festival features an Opera festival and a Jazz Festival which have live artists in indoor and outdoor settings. The University of Western Australia also houses the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, which has been acknowledged as one of the finest university galleries in Australia. The collection comprises more than 2000 artworks and contains examples from leading Australian and international artists acquired through donations, purchases and bequests.
The City of Perth with a population of 1.6 million offers many cultural opportunities and quick access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. The nearby coastal city of Fremantle is well-known for its artisans and in 1987 served as the host city of the America's Cup Yachting Race. With a Mediterranean climate, Perth was recently ranked 4th on The Economist's 2008 list of the "World’s Most Livable Cities".

You can expect to receive 12 undergraduate research credits for the program. Credits can be applied as research credits through your home department or through GEN ST 350. You will coordinate with a UW faculty member and have them pre-approve credit for the proposed project before departure. The faculty member will also supervise your internship progress and, at the end of the internship period, assess the final academic product to assign a grade and credit amount.

You can choose to live in homestays with local families or in a single dormitory in St Thomas More College at UWA. Meals are provided for all housing options.

Program Expenses, Financial Aid & Scholarships

You will pay a program fee of AUD $6,500 (approximately USD $4,800) directly to UWA. This fee covers the cost of research training and expenses, welcome and farewell events, and several day trips. Additional expenses include accommodations, meals, airfare, international health insurance, and personal expenses. The Study Abroad Fee will be billed to your UW student account according to the regular UW tuition billing schedule.

For the total estimated costs of this particular program, you may request a budget by filling out a Budget Request Form.

Application Process

To apply for this program, click the "Apply Now" button and follow the prompts to create an application. After you create your application, click on each of the links on your study abroad application homepage and complete the remaining application requirements: questionnaires, material submissions, and electronic signature documents.
Under the list of questionnaires is a link labeled “Affiliated Program Application Instructions.” For College of Engineering partner programs, this step is not necessary because students will receive instructions on how to submit their applications to the program provider after submitting the UW Study Abroad application. In order to ensure that your UW Study Abroad application is considered complete, click on the link labeled “Affiliated Program Application Instructions,” enter the current date in the date field at the bottom of the page, and click Submit. Contact if you have any questions.

This study abroad program also requires completion of a secondary application specific to UWA. The secondary application requires the submission of a resume, unofficial transcript, and personal statement. Additional information and instructions for the secondary application will be sent by email after the UW application deadline.
