At DIS Sweden, you'll study alongside the urbanites of Stockholm, who balance life in a vibrant metropolis with the city's beautiful and serene surroundings. You'll traverse the narrow winding streets that populate the old city, where the Swedes have carefully preserved Europe's medieval aesthetic dating back to the 13th century. As a major cultural hub of Sweden, Stockholm's galleries, exhibitions, and restored historical artifacts shed light on their heritage. You'll have the opportunity to explore the city's fourteen islands by crossing over ancient bridges and scenic waterways by train, foot, or ferry. Proximity to Stockholm's fantastic nature defines the peace in this city, as your next cross-country ski adventure or kayaking afternoon are all within easy reach! While rich in history, Sweden prides itself on progressive thinking, with openness and equality as values held close by the Swedes. As home to the Nobel Prize and a list of prestigious universities, institutions, and leading innovators, studying in Stockholm will offer the context of a capital led by forward-looking decision-makers and scholars.

Site
The City of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, sits atop of 14 islands on the sparkling waters of Lake Mälaren. Stockholm is home to many famous sites, including the 13th-century Storkyrkan Cathedral, the Kungliga Slottet Royal Palace, and the Nobel Museum. The city also has over 50 bridges, which allow travelers to explore the extensive Baltic Sea archipelago.

DIS Study Abroad is dedicated to providing immersive and meaningful study abroad experiences. There are many opportunities for study abroad participants to connect with locals and to explore Scandinavia and Europe
Meet the Locals
- Visiting Host Program: Students who aren't living in a Homestay can sign up for a Visiting Host. Share your own culture and get to know the traditions, mentality, and values of Swedes.
- Local Sports and Clubs: Join a club and/or recreational sports - a great way to bond with others that share similar interests!
- Language and Culture Courses: Learn key phrases in Swedish and gain a further understanding of culture and traditions of your host country. 65% of DIS students take a language course and later recommend it as one of their favorite electives!
- Evening Seminars: Spend an evening at a panel, seminar, or debate where you can discuss burning issues of our time with DIS faculty, experts, and guest lecturers.
- Cultural Open Events: Join in one of the many cultural events organized by local youth.
- Volunteer: Get involved in day-long or semester-long volunteer projects in Stockholm by being a DIS Ambassador!
DIScovery Trips
Journey outside of Europe's well-trodden cities and experience a destination that you might not otherwise discover. From the Fjords of Norway to the markets of Southern France, there is an adventure for everyone. Full of activities and challenges, DIScovery Trips allow you to explore an interest, try something new, and just have fun! Past DIScovery Trips include:
- Southern France - Culinary Exploration: Indulge in a gastronomic journey with fellow foodies to Southern France, one of the world's most revered regions for food and drinks.
- Czech Trek: Travel to the 'Bohemian Paradise,' where you will have the opportunity to rock climb, crawl, zip-line, and explore nature.
- Bornholm Bike Trip: Cycle around the picturesque Danish island of Bornholm to discover quaint villages, sample the famous smoked herring, and dig your toes in the white sand.

Prerequisites and Language Requirements
Students participating in this program must be of Junior standing or above at the time of departure and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
Credits and Conversion Scale
You will approx. receive 20 - 25 UW credits per semester. How our office will determine the amount is through our Credit Conversion Scale for the program.

Courses
Choose from over 50 academically challenging courses taught in English across a variety of disciplines. Students participating in a DIS Study Abroad program will have access to 23 programs: Architecture, Biomedicine, Child Diversity & Development, Communication, Computer Science, Environmental Science of the Arctic, European Humanities, European Politics, Global Economics, Information/Graphic Design, Interior Architecture, International Business, Justice & Human Rights, Medical Practice & Policy, Neuroscience, Prostitution & the Sex Trade, Psychology, Public Health, Sociology, Sustainibility in Europe, Urban Design, and Urban Studies in Europe.
DIS offers a range of summer courses of varying lengths and structures, and many include a study tour to a destination in Sweden or elsewhere in Europe.

Housing
DIS Stockholm offers four distinct housing options:
- Homestay: Be a part of an intercultural exchange by living with local hosts in their home, sharing daily routines, and spending time together during meals and through activities.
- Living and Learning Community (LLC): Pursue a passion alongside like-minded DIS students, interact in a meaningful way with the local community, and reflect on your intercultural experience.
- Residential Community: Live with other DIS students in a DIS-run residence, and seek engagement with locals independently.
- Studentboende: Have a unique Swedish communal living experience with local and international students in a tight-knit residential community.
Students participating in the DIS Stockholm summer program will live with either local students or with fellow DIS students.
The UW Study Abroad Office can't officially advise you about visas.
The volume and diversity of students participating, the shifting requirements of foreign governments, and the complexity of these applications make it impossible for us to accurately advise you on immigration policies.
If your program requires a visa, documentation will be provided from your host institution after your acceptance.
Program Expenses
In most cases, if you are attending an affiliated program you will be billed by, and pay all fees directly to, the program provider or institution operating the program. The UWSA Study Abroad Fee will be billed to your UW student account according to the regular UW tuition billing schedule.
Financial Aid
- A large percentage of UW students utilize financial aid to study abroad. Most types of financial aid can be applied to study abroad fees.
- You can submit a revision request to increase the amount of aid for the quarter you are studying abroad. These additional funds are usually awarded in the form of loans. To apply, fill out a revision request form, attach the budget sheet (available via the link at the top of this brochure) and submit these documents to the Office of Student Financial Aid. Scholarships
- There are many scholarships designed to fund students studying abroad. The UW administers a study abroad scholarship program and there are national awards available as well.
- Scholarships vary widely in their parameters. Some are need-based, some are location-based, and some are merit-based.
- For UW Study Abroad Scholarships fill out a short questionnaire on your UW Study Abroad program application to be considered. You must apply by the priority application deadline for the program in order to be considered for a scholarship. Click the Overview tab to view application deadlines.
- Consult our Scholarships page to learn about UW-based and national scholarships. The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards can help you learn about additional opportunities.
- DIS also offers merit and need-based scholarships to students participating in their programs.
- The Anders Uhrskov Scholarship is awarded to one semester students who has demonstrated leadership on their college campus at home and who is dedicated to enhancing their global leadership and critical thinking skills at DIS. The award is up to $10,000.
- The DIS Scholarship is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Awards range from $500 - $5,000 per semester.
- The Diversity Scholarship is need-based financial support to students from populations that are underrepresented in study abroad including those from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, sexual orientation, and educational backgrounds including first-generation college students. Awards range from $500 - $5,000 per semester.

We understand that figuring out your finances for study abroad can be complicated and we are here to help. Here are some ways to find additional support:

Application Process
The study abroad application includes small questionnaires and electronic signature documents related to UW policies and expectations for study abroad. In addition, students should also complete an application on the DIS website.
Orientation
To be eligible to study abroad, you must complete the mandatory pre-departure orientation facilitated by UW Study Abroad. Visit your study abroad homepage to complete this mandatory orientation. You must also attend any program-specific orientations offered by the program director.
UW Study Abroad Office also offers several optional orientations aimed at preparing you for your study abroad experience. You can visit the Orientation section of our website to view the current schedule and to register for any optional orientation sessions that pique your interest.
Orientation must be completed prior to the enrollment deadline for the quarter that you are studying abroad.
Disability Accommodations
The University of Washington is committed to providing access and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, activities, and education for individuals with disabilities. Withdrawals
The UW Study Abroad Fee is non-refundable once the payment contract has been submitted. Students withdrawing from a program may also be responsible for paying a percentage of the program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. More details about the withdrawal policy are included in your payment contract. Note that no part of the program fee is refundable once the program has begun.
The date of withdrawal is considered the business day a withdrawal form is received by UW Study Abroad. Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing by completing the following steps:
- Provide notice in writing to the program director that you will no longer be participating in the program.
- Submit a signed withdrawal form to UW Study Abroad.
